You Can Be a Better You Anytime of the Year
It's that time of year again. Everyone is making their list of New Year's resolutions. These goals are made to motivate us to become a better version of ourselves. No matter what
our goals consist of, we all have the same desire to become better people.
There are all sorts of websites with ideas of goals you can set and how to maintain them. If we are being honest though, we'll most likely fall short of our goals by the end of January.
Better health
Our goals can be for physical health. We determine that we'll go into the gym X amount of times each week, eat more fruits and vegetables, and no more massive amounts of sweets. Usually this category contains losing weight which unfortunately reiterates to our children that weight is equivalent to value.
We can also set a goal for becoming more emotionally healthy. Planning to see the therapist more often or writing in a thankfulness journal daily.
Then we have goals for spiritual health. We say we'll read the Bible daily, pray for someone every time we tell them we will, and not skip church often.
Better heart
Though we have goals for our physical and mental health we also set goals for within. We write out our plan to have a more compassionate heart. Maybe we decide to give to the homeless in some sort of capacity when we see them on the side of the road. Maybe we plan to listen better when our friends and loved ones are hurting.
There might even be a desire for a more loving heart. This can propel us to make plans to fulfill a need when we see it.
Bigger achievements
Whether we are talking achievements at work, at home, or those within ourselves, we desire to reach the next step. These can consist of anything from a promotion at work, winning an award, finishing a physically challenging race, or even teaching our children how to potty train. Potty training might just be the toughest category, and the death of me.
Be better now
One of the greatest things about life is that we don't have to wait to become a better person. We have the ability to be our best selves anytime of the day, anytime of the week, and anytime of the year. It doesn't have to be New Year's Eve to make a long list of goals. It also doesn't have to be the New Year to start seeking them out.
Sometimes we've fallen off the band wagon of working out. Luckily we can get back on track, even in the middle of a cruise to the Caribbean. Would that be particularly fun? Probably not, but we are free to do so!
When our mental health has gone haywire and we are losing it, we have the ability to work on getting mentally healthy again, at our own pace
If we have one more goal to hit before getting our next raise, we can make that happen right now.
Life is a gift
Life is beautiful and we are blessed to have the gift of choice. It is a beautiful choice to get out of bed everyday, love ourselves and love others.
We can fail our New Year's resolutions in January and wait till the following January to start again, or we can get back up in February and try again. At times we may fail, but that doesn't mean we are worthless, it just means we are humans.
Set your goals daily and love yourself through the failures and victories.
