Mommy and Me Mother’s Day Photoshoot

Mother’s Day is just around the corner. And now that Spring time is here, it’s time to start getting outside. The sun is out and feeding joy to the soul once again. We all love the outdoors, especially towards the end of winter. We’ve been cooped up all season with snow and negative temperatures, and now it’s time for us to thaw out. What a better way to thaw out than to get some cute photos taken just in time for your own Mother’s Day gift!

Let’s get up and get ready for the day, get out of our sweats and put on something cute with our kids. There’s something magical about getting ready for the day that makes you a lot more productive, but also makes you feel a lot better mentally.

Minis and Me

We love our minis! Maybe they are ours through birth. In which case we created them, grew them in our bellies, and birthed them in our own unique and treacherous ways. Or maybe we have loved them through foster care or adoption. They may have our genetics we often get to see little pieces of ourselves in them. They may have just acquired our qualities and mannerisms through being with us day in and day out. Either way, parenting is so special! It is one of the best gifts to be given. One of the best way to remember moments is to take photos along the journey. We document milestones, ceremonies, but most importantly we capture all the love that is shared amongst us.

Get Creative

Creativity is best for your photoshoot. Maybe you want to put together outfits that compliment each other. Pick a color scheme and add in a couple different patterns. Maybe you want to get those mommy and me matching outfits. Matching outfits are super easy for those who don’t have much of a creative gene. It’s one and done type situation.

You can even wear your jammies with messy hair, making it a fun and silly photoshoot. Because why can’t you wear your pjs outdoors for a photoshoot? What’s best is choosing what fits you and your kids personality. No matter what you choose, just find the time to go out and snap those sweet photos.

No Need For Fancy

Lucky for our generation, we don’t necessarily need anything fancy anymore. Can we still use a fancy camera or book an amazing photographer? Absolutely! If that is what you prefer and can afford it, go for it! For those whose budget can’t spring for fancy, just know that phone cameras have come a long way, so you can totally do this with your own phone.

My favorite phone camera tip I have ever heard is to wipe down the lenses before you shoot. It helps the photos come out super crisp and clean. Another tip is taking advantage of the outdoor lighting. Outdoor lighting makes for a great photo, just make sure not to put yourselves in direct sunlight, or you’ll end up with a bunch of squinted eyes.

Lastly, if you struggle with editing photos, simply buy a set of presets that you like and download them to lightroom. Professional photographers sell them for only a few dollars.

Ask For Help

If your budget isn’t able to spring for a photographer and you are choosing to use your own phone or camera, snag your husband or a friend. I learned that if my husband doesn’t have to be in the photos, he’s much more willing to put up with my photo antics. Just give him a little guidance. Tell him where you need him to stand or what angle you need it at. Don’t forget to tell him to take a lot of photos to make sure you get some good ones captured.

If your husband isn’t able to help, ask a friend. If your friend has kids, you can take turns taking each others photos. Girl friends are almost always willing to help each other out. All you have to do is ask.

Incorporate Something For The Kids

Let’s be honest, photoshoots are mostly for moms. We love looking back at photos over the years and end up shedding tears over how they’ve grown up way too fast. Something we maybe don’t love though is whining that may take place when taking photos.

I have learned over time that if you make it fun for the kids, they are much more inclined to take as many photos as you’d like. Maybe you’re cracking jokes to get those genuine smiles and laughter, or tacking adding on a fun activity for them afterwards. You can choose to take them to somewhere they’ve been begging to go. That might be a fun park, a splash pad, or a new movie at the theater.

You can even turn the photoshoot itself into something fun, like running around a playground. Hop on the swings together, swing through the monkey bars, and make a train on the slide.

Kids will always end up ready to go when there’s something fun in it for them.

Enjoy Creating Memories

Take your time, make it you, but most importantly, make it fun! We don’t get our time back with our babies, so make the time that you do have count while you have it. Create memories to look back on that have a great story to tell. I promise you’ll be happy you did, especially making those memories in that warm Spring sunshine.

Happy Mother’s Day!

xoxo
